My Bi-Monthly Update: NASA SUITS Competition, Classes, etc
My Bi-monthly Update
By Inaya Syed
Hey everybody! How is your day going? Today, I would like to update everyone on my life so far.
From the NASA SUITS competition to classes, I have a lot to share!
NASA SUITS
During the month of September, I applied to the NASA SUITS competition through my school's American Society of Mechanical Engineers chapter. I initially did not think I would get into the competition, if I am completely being honest. However, at the end of September, I got an email stating I was selected to move forward in the competition.
I was ecstatic! I immediately called Hidaya and told my entire family about the news. I rushed over to a friend, who is also in the competition and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers President. I told him how grateful I was for the opportunity and that I would work on it every day. I still feel some butterflies in my stomach about this whole competition. Right now, we are drafting up a proposal to send to NASA. We get to know who is selected in November.
Clubs/organizations
As many of you know, I am now the Secretary of the Chess Club, Co-managing editor of the Campus Slate, and announced on Sunday that I am starting a Long Island Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers. I plan to be president for the upcoming semester, of course.
I am also producing content with the Campus Slate, our student-run newspaper on Long Island Campus. (Both video and written) I am one of their reporters. Honestly, the toll of the clubs I have and the work I have is surprisingly little. I get to design flyers, write, and overall be creative about my work.
Current Personal Projects
As for personal projects, I have been reorganizing my room and my closet currently. I have already built a cube organizer and have gotten cube organizers to rearrange my stuff into categories. My closet still needs work, and we are planning to turn our old entertainment room into a personal office for my mother. We had gotten shelves, boxes, and organized them based on the occasion of what we needed. My whole house is being reorganized currently.
As for digital and engineering personal projects, I am still working on improving sound-damp, my start-up, the website for sound-damp, and planning to do an official website integration for Dirt and Robots (Stay tuned for that!)
Classes
Since failing engineering statics over the summer, I have enrolled in that specific class for the fall 2025 semester. So far, I have been doing well, as I had learned the topics prior. My other classes, Calculus III, Physics II, Electrical Circuits I, and Technology and Global Issues, have been doing just fine. So far, I just need to study a bit more and raise my grade point average from 2.8 to 3.0. Currently, I am not looking for a second job until my federal work study award runs out.
I am also currently out of the ACE, or Achieving College Excellence, program. This program helps at-risk students below a 2.8 grade point average keep their scholarships. Physics II is difficult for most, but I actually like it a lot. Calculus III is the same. Electrical Circuits needs work done, and Technology and Global issues does not require a lot of work, more so debating skills.
Next Semester and winter break plans
Over winter break, I plan to get some credits done from Stony Brook University and CUNY City Tech. The classes I am hoping to take are Differential Equations and Strength of Materials. These two classes are crucial to getting ahead of the curve.
As for next semester, I plan to do senior-level classes: Manufacturing, engineering dynamics, machine design, Intro to modern physics, and Introduction to modern physics. That is a total of sixteen credits. Registration has not opened up yet, but proposed schedules have.
Overall, I cannot wait for what happens next in this long chapter we call life, and hope you will follow along with me. Thanks for reading, I hope you guys have a nice day!
