Tales From Work: My First Ever Job and How It Backfired for Me

By Inaya Syed

Have you ever applied to a job? Have you gotten said job? If so, be sure to miss out on whatever I did for my first ever job.

The year was 2022. I had recently turned eighteen years old. I accepted my first ever job after opening a bank account. It was at a tutoring place, with a very tough, but fair lady who was running the place in West Babylon, New York. I was the worst employee you could have!

During my shifts, I would set up for the student, only to receive young kids I couldn't handle. I was never really trained to deal with young children, and I struggled explaining subjects to them. Nevertheless, I would always say positive things about the child to their mother, no matter how awful and evil they were.

One particular shift, I had fallen asleep before the student arrived, only to be woken up by my former boss. With the student. So, not only did my former boss saw me asleep, but my student did too. After my student left, I immediately apologized to my former boss. She let me off with a warning.

Later, I believe, in March, I texted my former boss, telling her I couldn't do my job for an entire month. Fun Fact: It was the end of February at that point. I had to due to my father being my main source of transportation. For anyone who knows me, I don't drive. He was going to be gone an ENTIRE MONTH due to my older sister's wedding clothes needed to be taken from Pakistan to the United States for the wedding. Therefore, no father, no job transportation. "What about your mother?" you might ask. My mother was busy with her own work. She left the house every day at 7:00 AM, so she could not drive me. Obviously, my former boss was miffed. How could I take off work for a month?

One day, I received a email, firing me. Made sense at the time. However, I was heartbroken, and I lashed out at my family. After a while, it stopped hurting. I was able to go back to job hunting the next year, however, I was never going to be the same girl again.

Props to the former boss for dealing with me for a couple months! I am so sorry for being a bad employee. However, if you never taken a chance on me, I would not be where I am today. So, thank you for that. You have opened my eyes and more opportunities for me with on-campus jobs, where I gained an income alongside an education.
